About the Position
The County of San Luis Obispo’s Sheriff’s Office has an exciting opportunity available for a Computer Forensic Specialist.

Incumbents in this position perform specialized investigative assignments in the collection, preservation, and analysis of evidence, and does other related work as required.

Duties include, but are not limited to: examining, disassembling, reassembling, evaluating, extracting data, and interpreting extracted data from computer hardware, smart phones, data storage devices, media storage devices, compact discs, DVDs, floppy discs, and detached or attached hard drives; collecting evidence, transferring data from evidentiary items to other forms of media for presentation in court and for long term storage as evidence; preparing written reports on the analysis completed and verbally communicating significant findings to the assigned Sheriff’s Office personnel responsible for the specific investigation; and testifying in State and Federal courts on evidence-related issues as an expert witness.

The Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is an individual who is either currently working or recently worked as a Computer Forensic Specialist in a law enforcement environment.

Incumbents in the position provide concise reporting to help detectives and other officials analyze data and evaluate its relevance to the case under investigation.

Successful candidates will possess a knowledge of laws governing the collection of evidence and admissibility into a court of law; the ability to conduct thorough and complete analysis of computer born data and imagery; prepare written documentation of investigation and conclusions in a clear and concise manner; maintain workload statistical data; testify as an expert witness in a court of law relating to evidence issues; and learn new techniques and skills associated with evidence collection, examination and testimony.

Minimum Qualifications:
Graduation from high school or possession of a G.E.D. and three years of experience with a government-operated law enforcement agency performing crime scene investigations, photographic duties, and collection of evidence.

Required Licenses/Certifications:
A valid driver’s license is required at the time of application. A valid CALIFORNIA driver’s license is required at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.

Knowledge and experience with various operating systems including (e.g. Windows, Macintosh, Linux or UNIX); electronic mail systems (e.g. Exchange and GroupWise; Microsoft Office applications; intrusion tools); and computer forensic tools (e.g. EnCase, Access Data, and FTK and ethical hacking) is highly desirable.

*Please note: Incumbents in the Sheriff’s Computer Forensic Specialist position spend extended periods of time examining computer files, information, videos and photos that are often sensitive and shocking in nature and indicative of crimes against public morality. Successful candidates must have the ability to effectively maintain their mental and emotional state when performing the duties of their position.
