Australia’s eSafety commissioner has fined social media platform X over child safety failures.

X – formerly known as Twitter – was rebranded after being acquired by Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

The social media platform was fined more than $600,000 for failing to explain how it was addressing illegal child abuse material.

The company has 28 days to challenge or pay the fine.

The commissioner also issued a formal warning to Google for responding to questions about abusive material with generic answers.
