Dumpling drama! The bad date story spree was inspired by New York Times reporter Taylor Lorenz , who shared her own embarrassing date story on Twitter
The bad date story spree was inspired by New York Times reporter Taylor Lorenz, who shared her own embarrassing date story on Twitter earlier this month.
‘Once I went on a date to a dumpling place and I thought from the menu I was ordering individual dumplings, so I ordered what I thought was 6 or so, but each choice was actually 8 dumplings,’ she said.
‘So I had like 50 dumplings come and I tried to eat as many as I could like it was normal.’
She later added that it ended up costing quite a bit.
‘I was like whoa these are REALLY expensive dumplings, but it was a date so I just paid at the counter like ok damn. Then they started bringing them all to our table and I was like o s***.’
The tweet earned thousands of likes on Twitter — but over 130,000 once it was shared by author and activist Rachel Cargle on Instagram.
Rude! It was shared by Rachel Cargle on Instagram, who offered her own story about a man who said hello and then ghosted her
Rachel also added her own funny story about a date she went on with a man from an app five years ago.
‘When we arrived he said hello, hugged me kindly and then told me to hold a second while he ran to the bathroom before we grabbed our dinner,’ she said. ‘I said okay, grabbed a seat in the busy outdoor area we were in.
‘After waiting an uncomfortable amount of time I go to call his phone and he blocked me — completely ditched me. I got live ghosted and never heard from him again.’
She went on to ask commenters to leave their own bad date stories, and hundreds replied.
‘I did this with sushi,’ wrote a woman named Andie, referencing Taylor’s original dumpling story. ‘Ordered maybe 32 or so accidentally. Managed to eat around 25 or so. Waiter said he was impressed’
‘Had a two month long intense letter writing love affair with a guy from freshman year but when sophomore year started and i showed up for our first date I realized I had been writing letters with a totally different guy and one i did not want to date,’ wrote a woman named Heidi.

All while his mom was continuously calling him (a 30 yo man) wondering where he was.’
Yet another commenter said that a guy texted to say he would be 15-20 minutes late to a dinner date.
‘Come to find out he was late because he decided to go to happy hour with a friend at a better restaurant than where we were meeting, had dinner there, then came and ate another dinner with me but his debit card didn’t work so I ended up covering everything. He also started a few sentences with “to play devil’s advocate”. Sigh. I should have left after the first devils advocate,’ they wrote.

A commenter named Ashley said a guy told her she reminded him of his ex — who had a restraining order against him.
Not every bad date spells disaster, though. A commenter named Jasmine wrote that she and a man got tacos on a third date.
‘I LOVE tacos but for some reason this place did not sit well,’ she said. ‘As soon as we turned to leave the parking lot I had to throw up really bad. I didn’t want to ask him to stop but finally it was too late. I ripped the car door open and started throwing up while he was driving… it couldn’t have been too bad.’
The twist ending: That was ten years ago, and they’re now married.
