ECONOMYNEXT – A former Maldivian state minister and a Sri Lankan cardiologist are among 34 arrests made in Sri Lanka in connection with an online sex-trafficking ring that had victimised a 15-year-old girl, police said.
The arrests so far include the girl’s mother, the deputy chairman of the Mihintale Pradeshiya Sabha, drivers, a designer who had worked on the ads promoting the victim online, a Buddhist monk, a captain and several crew members of a ship, and a gem merchant.

Police spokesman Senior Deputy Inspector General (SDIG) Ajith Rohana said former Maldivian State Minister Mohamed Ashmalee had paid for the underage girl’s services. A hotel manager who had provided a room is among those arrested.
The 41-year-old cardiologist, employed by a well-known private hospital in Colombo, was also a “customer” of the underage girl. He was arrested Tuesday (06) morning in Bandaragama on charges procuring a minor, according to Rohana.
A 33-year-old suspected arrested yesterday had acted as a procurer in the online child sex-trafficking ring, said Rohana.
The two suspects will be produced in the Colombo magistrate’s court Tuesday, he said.
The police Spokesman said a special investigation is launched by the Cyber Crime Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to identify other websites which have run the advertisement of the underage teen. (Colombo/July06/2021)
