State investigation into Alaska children’s services data breach still underway

FAIRBANKS — The Alaska Department of Health and Social Services is continuing to investigate a computer breach that may have disclosed personal information of individuals who have interacted with the Alaska Office of Children’s Services.

The department announced the security breach late Friday.

Department spokeswoman Katie Marquette said an investigation into the source of the breach and exactly what information was accessed is ongoing.

“We wanted to let people know about the breach as soon as possible so they could take the proper precautions against identity theft,” Marquette said. “We’re still trying to figure out exactly where the virus came from, what information was accessed and who was affected.”

The investigation has indicated that information potentially accessed from this breach originated in the Western region.
