Students evacuated from Belvidere High School over safety threat | MyStateline | #schoolsaftey

BELVIDERE, Ill. (WTVO) — Belvidere High School students were evacuated early Monday morning due to a “potential threat” at the school, according to school administrators.

Assistant Principal Shannon Wiercinski sent a message to parents after 9 a.m. this morning, saying, “Student safety is our number one priority, and as such we have responded to a concerning message sent via social media regarding a potential threat at BHS. Students who walk or drive have been dismissed from school. All other students have been evacuated to an off site location.”

Belvidere High School is located at 1500 East Avenue.

Students were moved to the Boone County Fairgrounds to be sent home by bus.

“Any students that do not have a ride, will be supervised and bussed home later today, starting at approximately 10:30,” Wiercinski said in a follow-up message.

Assistant Superintendent William Ady said the District does not believe the threat was credible.

Classes have been dismissed for the day.

Belvidere Superintendent Cassandra Schug said other Belvidere schools were placed on lockdown as a precaution.

“Please take a moment and remind your children that making any statement that could be interpreted as threatening is never a joke. I urge you to talk to your children now and impress upon them the seriousness of threats in today’s society,” Shug wrote in a statement. “Students need to be aware that the school and law enforcement agencies take these situations very seriously and are pursuing prosecution even when such incidents are intended as pranks.”

According to authorities, threats have been received at multiple schools across the Midwest on Monday, including West Bloomfield High School in West Bloomfield, Michigan, and West Lafayette Jr./Sr. High School in West Lafayette, Indiana. Police said there was no credibility to the threats.

Nationwide, in the last week, there have been reports of bomb threats at multiple schools across the country as the school year comes to a close.
