Systems restored after Ascension ransomware attack | #ransomware | #cybercrime

Ascension says most hospital departments, physician offices and clinics are back to using electronic documentation, charting and ordering systems.

AUSTIN, Texas — On Tuesday, Ascension Seton said the technology used for electronic patient documentation in care settings has been restored following a ransomware attack nearly a month ago.

Due to the incident, the hospital was forced to switch to using manual and paper-based systems. Now, Ascension says most hospital departments, physician offices and clinics are back to using electronic documentation, charting and ordering systems.

The health care network is still working to restore other additional technology systems.

All Ascension Seton hospitals, physician offices and care sites remain open and operational. Patients have been told to expect improved wait times and efficiencies.

“We thank you for your patience and understanding as we navigate this situation,” Ascension said. “Rest assured, our commitment to the health and safety of our community remains our highest priority.”

The ransomware attack was first reported on May 8. The hospital said it was working with a third-party expert to investigate the security issue and authorities were notified.

Ascension said it responded immediately, initiated an investigation and activated remediation efforts. Business partners were asked to temporarily suspend connection to the Ascension environment.

Some systems that were affected included Ascension’s electronic health records system, MyChart, which helps patients look at their medical records; some phone systems; and other systems that help with certain tests, procedures and medications.

Patients can find a list of frequently asked questions about the incident on the Ascension website.
