PONTIAC, Mich. – A teen has been charged with the homicide of a Pontiac man who was known to use social media to pose as an underage girl to catch sexual predators.

Robert Wayne Lee II, 40, known online as “Boopac Shakur,” was shot and killed on Friday, Sept. 29, 2023, inside a Pontiac restaurant. Prosecutors said that there is nothing to indicate that the shooting was related to a “sting operation” by Lee.

Prosecutors said Lee went into the restaurant where the suspect, a 16-year-old at the time, and the teen’s 18-year-old friend were sitting in a booth. Lee went up to the 18-year-old and they got into a physical fight.

According to prosecutors, security camera footage shows the suspect pull out a semi-automatic gun from his waistband, aim it at Lee, and fire multiple rounds. Lee was shot. Both teens fled the restaurant after the shooting. Lee was taken to an area hospital where he died from his injuries.

The suspect, who is now 17 years old, has been charged with homicide, carrying a concealed weapon, and felony firearm. He has been in custody on other charges since the shooting.

Teen on trial in prior Pontiac shooting

The suspect is facing charges for a different shooting that happened in the parking lot of a Pontiac supermarket.

Prosecutors said surveillance video from Sept. 20, 2023, shows a fight between two young men in the parking lot of a supermarket near the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Perry Street. The teen got out of a vehicle and opened fire at one of the people involved in the fight, prosecutors said.

The shooting was reported to police after the mother of the person who was shot at reported “suspicious activity near her home.”

The teen was charged with assault with intent to murder and felony firearm. The trial began on Thursday, Feb. 22, 2024, with Oakland County Circuit Court Family Division Judge Kameshia D. Gant.

Prosecutors have asked the court to designate the case, meaning the teen would be tried as an adult, but he could be sentenced as a juvenile, adult, or receive a sentence that uses aspects of a juvenile and adult sentence.
