In the chaos of codes, laughter is the password to survival

What began as a journey into Lessons in Simplicity-Planning took an abrupt turn into the chaotic realms of Facebook and cybersecurity. Originally focused on integrating planning elements into a writer’s routine, the narrative ventured into uncharted territory.

Unexpected beginnings

This story should have revolved around Lessons in Simplicity-Planning. That was the plan, and until last Saturday, it was well underway. Until I received an unexpected message from Kat, a long-time writing friend:

“Rod, got a friend request from you. Bit odd. Hacked, perhaps?”

Nah, that only happens to other people, I thought, promptly disregarding the question. The chances are it was someone using Kat’s profile for phishing. No siree Bob! I wasn’t going to fall for that old trick. I was much too computer-savvy for that. But life is never that simple, is it? Kat’s question had raised an uncomfortable possibility. It was time to change my password. Was time to change my password? I hope not.

Little did I know

Little did I know that the chaos of codes was about to engulf my Facebook world. The following morning, Crissie, a former workmate, and good friend dropped a bomb:

Rod, you been hacked, also received a friend request form you offering financial grants

This was my worst nightmare—a password reset.

A short history of passwords

In a simpler time, trust was a four-number password — 1, 2, 3, 4. But as mischief evolved, so did passwords: five numbers, letters and, of course, symbols. Good grief, what’s next? Biometrics?

My Cyber Security strategy was to keep a low profile. Yet, my enduring struggle with passwords persisted. Changing one spiraled into an excruciating saga, plus two-factor authentication — good grief!

The quest for a memorable passphrase

Consulting the oracle — Uncle Google, I discovered that I didn’t need a password; I needed a passphrase!
