A top barrister who campaigns against hacking relied on stolen emails to help him win a multimillion-pound High Court case. Hugh Tomlinson KC presented as evidence messages that had been hacked from the personal inbox of a businessman on the other side of the case he was fighting and dumped on the internet.

The barrister has campaigned against the theft of private communications as board chairman of Hacked Off, a pressure group set up in response to the phone-hacking scandal. He has previously described hacking as a “criminal technique” that causes “shock and distress” to those whose private information has been stolen.

The emails used by Tomlinson’s client were hacked from an account belonging to a businessman, Farhad Azima. Azima had been repeatedly targeted by
