Thumb Impression: Using Thumb Impression Of Woman, Crooks Steal 20k | Bengaluru News | #cybercrime | #infosec

BENGALURU: Not revealing OTPs and keeping account details a secret aren’t enough to secure you hard-earned money anymore. In what is perhaps a first-of-its-kind cybercrime in Karnataka, miscreants allegedly stole a 57-year-old woman’s thumb impression and used the Aadhaar-enabled Payment System (AePS) to siphon off Rs 20,000 from her bank account.
In her complaint to High Grounds police, the woman, a resident of Vasanthnagar and working as a domestic help, said on September 7 morning, she received a message stating Rs 10,000 had been deducted from her account. Shocked as she hadn’t initiated any transaction, the woman checked her bank details only to find that another Rs 10,000 had been debited from her account the previous morning. The woman rushed to the bank where officials found the cash had been transferred through AePS.

According to cybercrime police, fraud through AePS is possible either when the victim shares OTP with the miscreant, or the thumb impression is compromised.
“In this case, the woman hadn’t received any OTPs. So, her thumb impression has been compromised. It means miscreants have taken her fingerprint samples without her knowledge and used them to siphon off the money. We questioned the woman and she recalled sharing biometric details with a few persons while signing some property documents in Davanagere recently. What miscreants usually do is ask the victim to press on silicon wafer, where the fingerprints get recorded. Later, wrapping the same silicon on their fingers, miscreants place them on fingerprint sensors and login to the victim’s account,” he said.
Miscreants use Micro Automated Teller Machine, a hand-held device (similar to the devices used at fuel stations and shops to accept money through credit or debit cards), to complete the transactions. Such AePS-related cybercrimes are often reported in Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, said police.
