Some of the top South African books to read this month.

Beyond Who Will Rule South Africa?News24’s Book of the Month for November and a book everyone concerned about our political future should read – there are several intriguing new local publications to note this month and going into next.

The most sensational non-fiction work is The Thabo Bester Story: The Facebook Rapist, the Celebrity Doctor and the Escape from Cell 35 by GroundUp reporters Marecia Damons and Daniel Steyn (Tafelberg), the reporters who broke the story of Bester’s escape from Mangaung Correctional Centre. They’ve got the book together in quick time, and though the subject matter is indeed sensational, they approach it in a solid, sober fashion. The tale is shocking enough without telling it in tabloid style. Convicted rapist and murderer Bester and his “celebrity doctor” girlfriend are now on trial along with prison officials and others who helped him escape; this extraordinary con man was running various scams from within the prison anyway. It’s a bizarre tale, and there is doubtless more to come as the trial proceeds, but it’s a gripping and often eye-opening story. Read an extract here.

A more literary and relaxing read is Justin Fox’s Place: South African Literary Journeys (Umuzi). It’s the account of this travel journalist and novelist’s journeys to places associated with leading literary figures of the past and present, from Olive Schreiner’s eastern Karoo and Zakes Mda’s Wild Coast to the Lowveld of Percy Fitzpatrick and the Waterberg of Eugene Marais, among others. Fox’s fine sense of place, descriptive talent and literary sensibility combine to make this an engaging and educative set of vicarious trips across South Africa’s literary and literal landscapes.
