With more and more cybercrime and online scams taking place in recent times, the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) Fraud Squad is sounding yet another alarm.

This time it’s in relation to romance scams.

According to the TTPS, if you receive a message, whether it’s an email or text message- offering you valuables and maybe even cash- that sounds too good to be true, it usually is.

As a result the TTPS has issued several tips to avoid such ‘sticky situations.’

Quick Tips-

  • Swindlers portray themselves as being wealthy and generous.
  • Be wary of photos and videos showing their purported wealth.
  • Do online searches for similar photos and profile pictures.
  • Be suspicious if your new online romance partner starts making promises of money, gifts or even a committed relationship early on in the interaction.
  • Never part with your money for the promise of a more expensive ‘gift’.
  • Be wary of requests for money for investments, projects, loan payments, medical bills or even to organise Visas and travel documents to visit you.

Should you suspect that you’re a victim, you can make a report to the Fraud Squad at 612-2470 ext 15020/15021.
