TEXARKANA, Texas – Did you know that nearly half of all child car seats are not installed correctly?

That’s why the Texas Department of Transportation hosted a free car seat checking event on Monday for the community.

Jacquelyn Walker attended the TXDOT event to make sure her car safety seats are properly installed for the kids she babysits.

“I learned how to install a car seat. I’ve been improperly doing for many years. It was very important to attend this meeting,” said Walker.

Technicians checked to make sure seats were installed properly, and that children were in seats that are appropriate for for their age, height and weight.

Texas law requires all children under 8 years old be in a car seat whenever they ride in a vehicle, unless they’re taller than 4 feet 9 inches.

“When those car seats are misinstalled. It can be serious injury, damage to neck, severe bleeding or even death,” said Emyli Speer, TXDOT traffic safety specialist.

If your child is not properly restrained in a car seat in Texas, you could face a $250 fine in addition to court costs.

In 2022, 72 children under 8 years old were killed on Texas roadways, 16 of them were not restrained in a car seat.
