TYLER, Texas (KLTV) – A Tyler man busted in an online predator sting in 2022 pleaded guilty Wednesday.

Newell Milton Vandergrift, 69, was arrested in November of 2022 after a group called “Online Predator Poachers” alerted authorities of his criminal actions. The following investigation led to a charge of online solicitation of a minor under 14, to which Vandergrift pleaded guilty in Judge Debby Gunter’s court on Wednesday.

Vandergrift accepted a sentence of 10 years confinement for the crime, set to begin immediately.

According to Vandergrift’s arrest affidavit, a member of the online group posed as a 13-year-old girl to communicate with the man. In their chats, the document said Vandergrift told the member that he’d been with four other minors, one as young as 10 years old.

Vandergrift’s sentence is set to run concurrently with another sentence from Upshur County.
