U.S. medical tech company is victim of ransomware attack; Healthcare workers and patients affected | #ransomware | #cybercrime

A cyberattack on a health care technology company has created havoc throughout the country’s medical system as hackers have threated to release patient information and delay prescriptions and paychecks for medical workers, the Associated Press is reporting.

Change Healthcare, which processes billions of medical transactions a year, said on Thursday that the ransomware group ALPHV, or “Blackcat” claimed responsibility for the attack, the report said.

The company determined that Change Healthcare, Optum, UnitedHealthcare and UnitedHealth Group systems have been affected by the attack, which has also been messing with billing and care-authorization portals, the report said.

“The impact to hospitals is just now really starting to crystallize and as a result has been underreported,” American Hospital Association spokesperson Ben Teicher said. “As a result, we can’t really speak to the longer-term aftermath, but it can result in hospitals not being able to make payroll or patients still waiting for services to be approved.”

Change Healthcare has not said whether they’ve negotiated a ransom with the hackers, the report said.
