Union County Public Schools to add more school resource officers | #schoolsaftey

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Leaders at Union County Public Schools met to discuss increasing the number of school resource officers at Thursday night’s Board of Education meeting.

Before the meeting, only one deputy was assigned to two elementary schools at Union County Public Schools.

Now, the goal is for every school to have an officer, and only six of the 39 Union County officers will have to work at two schools.

The Union County Sheriff’s Office hired four new officers and established a captain position, which D. Allen will now hold.

By this time next year, the School Safety Division plans to have a one-to-one ratio of school resource officers to elementary schools.

The district also discussed expanding its virtual therapy services at Thursday’s meeting.

Leaders wanted to expand services from Atrium Health to four middle schools, including East Union Middle, Monroe Middle, Porter Ridge Middle and Sun Valley Middle schools. The cost of the expansion of virtual therapy services is $53,607.

That plan, as well as others, was approved by the board.
