A group of at least 10 people hacked a man to death Monday in full public view at a park on Sua road in Ludhiana. A friend of the deceased also suffered injuries in the clash.

The victim was identified as Lalu, 21, of Makkar Colony. He was a factory worker and a native of Ayodhya (UP). He had come to Ludhiana four months ago and was living in a rented room with his father and brother. Both the groups had met in the park for settlement of a dispute, but things again turned ugly when they resorted to physical violence using sharp-edged weapons.

Police have registered a murder case against Balwant and nine others, who are yet to be identified.

Inspector Inderjit Singh Boparai, Sahnewal police station, said that Lalu had a scuffle with the rival group late on Sunday over some petty issue while consuming liquor. Both groups again met at Indira Park on Sua road for a settlement. However, around 11.30 am, members of the rival group attacked Lalu and his friends with sharp-edged weapons. While Lalu was hacked to death, his friend Mohit was seriously injured. The rival group fled the spot leaving the body in the park.

An FIR for murder was registered at Sahnewal police station.
