Police are on the lookout for the gang that killed him.
R Anbarasan, a member of the opposition party’s Amma Pasarai, was travelling back home in a car after attending an event at Keerapakkam village with his friends.
Around midnight, they were crossing the Keerapakkam-Kayar stretch when five men hiding in a cemetery came out on two bikes.
They first hurled country bombs at the car, causing the driver to lose control and hit the brakes.
The gang then pulled Anbarasan out of the car. Anbarasan tried to run but the gang surrounded him and hacked him to death.
His friends though managed to escape. His mother, Kalyani Ravi, is the panchayat president. On information, Kayar Police rushed to the scene and moved Anbarasan’s body to Chengalpet Government Hospital for postmortem. Police are also checking the CCTV camera footage along the stretch to track the gang.
On Sunday, Anbarasan’s family and party members protested on Vandalur-Kandigai Road, demanding that police catch the accused immediately.
Police pacified the protesting crowd and assured them that the killers would be nabbed. Preliminary investigations have revealed that Anbarasan was in the real estate business, and police suspect a business rivalry to be the reason behind the murder. Anbarasan’s parents have been panchayat presidents for successive terms, and the police are also probing if there was any political rivalry behind the murder.
