Released on June 2, Shiny Happy People: Duggar Family Secrets takes viewers back to 2008 when the Duggar family starred in the TLC reality show 19 Kids and Counting. The family’s fame quickly plummeted due to the eldest Duggar son’s history of sexual abuse and the controversial practices of the family’s church, Institute in Basic Life Principles.
The Amazon Prime Video docuseries has a total of four episodes with each one focusing on a new topic. The series re-introduces the Duggars through the perspective of the interview subjects, which include family members Jill Duggar and Amy King, family friends Jim and Bobye Holt, and former members of the church.
The episodes explore the teachings of IBLP founder Bill Gothard, who later resigned due to allegations of sexual abuse, and Josh Duggar’s crimes, which include his teen history of sexually assaulting girls and his eventual arrest for possession of child pornography.
The series is dark and explosive and drops several shocking revelations about the conservative family that American television followed for over a decade. Where Is Josh Duggar Now?
As stated in the final episode of the docuseries, Josh Duggar is currently in prison. The convicted sex offender was sentenced to 12 years and seven months in prison in 2022. His sentence will be followed by 20 years of supervised release and he will have to register as a sex offender, which will bar him from unsupervised contact with minors. He is currently serving time at the Federal Correctional Institute (FCI) Seagoville in Texas.
When Duggar was a teenager, he sexually abused multiple girls, including four of his siblings. In 2021, he was found guilty of possession of child pornography. The agent reviewing the files on Duggar’s technology said it was “in the top 5 of the worst of the worst.” During the trial, parents Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar were uncooperative, and Jim Bob claimed to not remember the earlier assaults.
According to InTouch, Duggar’s prison release date has changed for a third time and he is currently set to leave prison on October 1, 2032. His original release date was August 12, 2032. Duggar was moved to the prison’s Special House Unit in February for alleged possession of a cell phone. As of May 30, 2023, The Sun claims that Duggar still owes $50,100 in restitution for his conviction.
Duggar’s wife, with whom he shares seven kids, has been regularly visiting him at the facility.
