The Impact Team, an unknown organization of cyber investigators, broke into Ashley Madison‘s website in July 2015, getting access to user account information for approximately 37 million users and threatening to publish it online.

Users’ passwords, email addresses, financial transaction histories, and login information were among the stolen data. According to Business Insider, the Impact Team threatened to publish all user records online, including fantasies about sex, credit card numbers, and actual names and addresses, unless Ashley Madison’s parent business, Avid Life Media, closed down all of its websites.

The Impact Team disclosed the reason behind the cyberattack at the time of the first breach. The hackers claim that Ashley Madison made a profit of $1.7 million by charging consumers $19 to completely remove their profiles but didn’t actually follow through with the requests.
