Former Boston Red Sox pitcher Austin Maddox was arrested in Florida last month as part of a wider law enforcement sting operation to crack down on people soliciting sex from minors, officials announced on Monday.

Key Facts

According to Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters, Maddox was one of 27 men arrested as part of a “multi-agency” operation codenamed “Valiant Knight” that began April 24 and ended April 28.

Undercover agents posing as children chatted online with Maddox and the suspects, and the accused agreed to meet and engage in sex acts with the purported minors at pre-arranged locations, Waters said.

Waters said Maddox was arrested after he allegedly “traveled with the intent of engaging in sexual activity with a 14-year-old child.”

According to local media reports, Maddox was arrested on four felony counts including “traveling to meet after using a computer to seduce/solicit/lure a child, soliciting a child by computer, unlawful use of a communication device, and producing or promoting a performance that includes sexual performance by a child.”

The former baseball player is being held in jail on a $300,000 bond and his next hearing will take place on May 28.

Maddox’s attorney told the Associated Press he plans to enter a plea of not guilty once the charges are formally filed.

Key Background

The 33-year-old former pitcher was picked in the 37th round of the 2009 Major League Baseball draft by the Tampa Bay Rays. Maddox did not sign the contract, choosing instead to play college baseball for the University of Florida. In 2012, he joined the Red Sox after being drafted in the third round, but made his MLB debut in 2017. Maddox only made 13 appearances for the team, his last one being in September 2017. Maddox was released by the Red Sox in 2019. According to his official MLB player page, Maddox retired in February 2020.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office released a video showing Maddox’s arrest as he arrived at the pre-arranged location. The video shows Maddox emerging from a red pickup truck and approaching the front door of a house before he is taken down by armed officers who emerge from inside. In the video, law enforcement officials allege Maddox resisted arrest until the K-9 got involved.
