PARKLAND, Fla. (WLAX/WEUX) – In 3 minutes 51 seconds, 34 people inside Marjory Stoneman Douglas High were shot by a murderer who broke into the school in 2018. The campus building will be torn down at the end of the school year but before that, a top school safety official from Wisconsin was invited to see the building.

Trish Kilpin, Wisconsin’s Office of School Safety Director, was invited to tour Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School. This comes as Wisconsin’s Office of School Safety is at risk of being lost.

The office is responsible for training planning and prevention of school violence throughout the state. Lawmakers chose not to provide the state funding necessary to keep services going for the next school year. Kilpin says, “I told them about the funding challenges in Wisconsin and there was an audible gasp in the room. Because the school safety director from Texas who just experienced Uvalde was there, we had people from Virginia who had just experienced a tragedy, there were people from other states stunned by this.”

Kilpin says she will preserve what she witnessed firsthand to better advocate to keep her office and the student safety service it provides running for years to come.
