Williams St. traffic at school drop-off, dismissal cause for concern | #schoolsaftey

TAUNTON – Traffic congestion outside Taunton High School and the adjoining John F. Parker Middle School campuses on Williams Street raises safety concerns among teachers, students and parents, according to School Committee Chairman Gregory DeMelo.

“We have 30 minutes of congestion in the morning when people are arriving,” he said. “It’s the same in the afternoon at dismissal time.”

DeMelo said the schools have three driveways that students, teachers, parents, administrators, and visitors use to access or leave the school campuses.

According to DeMelo, there is no (traffic) system in place.

“We have about 200 plus faculty and staff,” he said. “We have about 2,700 students at the high school. I estimate about 350 students drive to school.”

Designated lanes urged for Taunton High driveways

DeMelo said school officials should consider having designated lanes for drivers on the campus driveways to ease congestion.
