Woman abused by Bradford church teacher dubbed ‘sexual predator of monstrous proportions’ speaks out | #childpredator | #kidsaftey | #childsaftey

A woman who was sexually abused by a Sunday school teacher as a child has spoke out of her traumas, recalling how she “felt violated.”

John Laister, of Abingdon, Oxfordshire, was a Sunday school teacher at Thorpe Edge Evangelical Church in Bradford, when he was jailed for 14 years in 2014 for sexually abusing two girls. A judge branded him “a sexual predator of monstrous proportions” at the time of his sentencing.

It was then in 2019 that he received a further 11-years in prison after he was found guilty of more sex attacks. One of his victims, who can’t be named, was a child at the time of the assaults and recalled how she was abused over a number of years in the 1970s.

She has now spoke out of the traumas from her childhood. She recalled how she only felt confident to report her abuser after learning Laister had been jailed.

The woman said: “I knew what Laister was doing was wrong and felt violated. However, I also felt that if I told anyone about what happened, they wouldn’t believe me.

“I tried to compartmentalise what happened and blank it out, but deep down it always remained with me.

“It was only reading decades later that Laister had been jailed for abusing others that I felt confident to come forward. I kept thinking I needed to act to protect others. Reporting what happened to me was nerve wracking, but it was such a relief to be heard and believed after all those years and I wished I’d done it sooner.
