A woman committed suicide in her lover’s office at Bianibazar upazila in Sylhet on Monday noon after hacking the lover to serious injuries.

The deceased was Khayrunnesa Mouri, 40, a resident of Khashirnam Nagar village in Kurarbazar union of the upazila, police said.

Bianibazar police station officer-in-charge Tajul Islam told New Age that Mouri, who was unmarried, had a love affair for several years with Gopal Chandra Das, 32, son of late Sunil Chandra Das of Khashir Patnipara village of the same area.

Quoting the local people, he said that the relation between Mouri and Gopal, a health worker of the local union healthcare centre, was deteriorating after Gopal married another girl around a year back.

Moury suddenly reached the healthcare centre at around 12:30pm on Monday and hacked Gopal rampantly with a machete in his office room.

At one stage, Gopal somehow managed to come out of the healthcare centre and started shouting for help.

His colleagues and the locals took him to the Bianibazar upazila health complex after rescuing him from the spot, the OC said.

When the locals were busy with Gopal, Mouri closed the door of office room of Gopal from its inside and hanged herself with a window curtain from an iron grill on the room,’ he said.

Additional superintendent of Sylhet district police, Shyamal Banik, told New Age that a police team rushed to the spot immediately after receiving the news and recovered the woman’s body after breaking open the door.

‘Taking legal steps is underway,’ the police officer said in the evening.
