Young Burlington, Mass. students learn bus, pedestrian, traffic safety before start of school year
As students prepare for the first day of a new school year, police in one Massachusetts town are teaching the youngest students the basics of bus, pedestrian and traffic safety.Complete with child-sized crosswalks, street signs and traffic signals, Burlington’s “Safety Town” program for incoming kindergarten and first-grade students first got rolling back in the mid-1970s. It teaches important safety lessons ahead of the town’s official start of the school year, on Aug. 30. “A lot of the parents like the fact that we’re emphasizing the safety points of the program,” Sgt. Peter Abaskharoun of the Burlington Police Department said. “I think it’s reminding them maybe some of the other points they may have forgotten throughout the years.””I’m a teacher myself, but it’s nerve-wracking when it’s your own children going off to kindergarten,” Michelle Santo said. “Being here today and having them go over that stuff is great.”Santos’ daughter, Addie, said she learned to look both ways before stepping into a street. NewsCenter 5’s Doug Meehan asked her, “Are you ready for kindergarten now?””Yes!” Addie said.
