KOCHI: A youth forced his way into the house of a 19-year-old girl near Perumbavoor and hacked her with a machete, inflicting serious injuries on her forehead and neck. He also hit the girl’s grandparents with a cricket bat when they tried to intervene. The attacker was later found dead hanging.
According to the police, Basil (21), of Iringole, attacked the victim and hacked her in the sit-out of her house at Koottumadom around 12pm on Tuesday. She was initially admitted to a private hospital in Perumbavoor and was later shifted to Ernakulam Medical College where she continued to remain critical.
Basil also hit the girl’s 72-year-old grandfather and his 70-year-old wife with a cricket bat when they tried to intervene. As per the FIR, the elderly man sustained bruises near his left eye and on his left elbow and stomach. His wife sustained injuries to the left side of her head and right palm.
Basil was later found dead hanging at Koottumadom near Iringole, Perumbavoor, on Tuesday afternoon. Police said that prima facie he died by suicide.
The victim and the accused were friends and the attack seemed to be triggered by the girl refusing to entertain his proposal for a romantic relationship, said police. The victim was a nursing student, and the attack took place when her parents were not at home.
When Basil reached the victim’s house, she was seated in the sit-out of the house. After talking to her briefly, he took out a machete and hacked her multiple times, said a senior officer. The accused managed to flee when neighbours rushed to the house, hearing the commotion.
Kuruppampady Police registered a case for house-trespass, voluntarily causing hurt using a dangerous weapon and for attempted murder under relevant sections of the IPC.
