Who will win?
Do you use YouTube?
Do you have an adblock installed? Maybe you have installed:
- AdGuard
- Adblock Plus
- Ublock Origin
Well, the bad news is if you use an adblocker, YouTube now hates you. It is now against the terms of service to use one. In its help center, it says:
Ads on YouTube help support the creators you love and let billions of people around the world use the streaming service.
When you block YouTube ads, you violate YouTube’s Terms of Service. If you use ad blockers, we’ll ask you to allow ads on YouTube or sign up for YouTube Premium. If you continue to use ad blockers, we may block your video playback.
To avoid the interruption, allow ads on YouTube or sign up for YouTube Premium.
It all started off quietly as YouTube didn’t want to alrm its users. If you clicked on a video you would get a pop up like this:
As you can see getting a pop-up before you can even watch a video is super annoying.
However, you were able to dismiss it by clicking on the “X” and resume watching your video. But Youtube kept upping the ante.
They did this by showing you the same popup but you had a timer in the upper right-hand corner instead of an “X.”
The ironic thing is that the time is shorter than the ads you will get served before watching a video.
Would this annoy you?
It would for most people.
This didn’t stop Youtube from going to extreme measures once again. This time they would allow you to watch videos as normal but with a twist.
It would allow you to watch 3 videos and after the third video you won’t be able to watch anymore.
