BEND Ore. (KPTV) – Thursday’s deadly shooting at an elementary school is not the first time a loaded gun was brought onto a Bend-La Pine school campus, according to a district safety report from last year.We found the report, which was published after a student brought a loaded gun to school on Oct. 21, 2024.In that case, a middle school student brought a loaded gun to Pilot Butte Middle School in Bend. No one was hurt after a school resource officer on campus took the gun from the student. The incident prompted a review of the district’s safety procedures.According to the report, the school district and Bend police agreed more schools needed dedicated resource officers instead of sharing officers between multiple schools. The report also said the district did not see a need to install metal detectors or wireless panic alarm systems, saying leaders were confident in communication channels and camera networks already in schools.Bend-La Pine safety report from 2024 recommended more school resource officers but no metal detectors after loaded gun at Pilot Butte Middle School.(KPTV)In summary, Bend-La Pine schools have on-site resource officers, cameras at all schools and a communication plan, but schools do not have metal detectors or wireless alarm systems. While the earlier incident led to a safety review, the latest shooting will begin with a criminal investigation. Public safety expert Ernie Williams said the early hours are critical for gathering information.“First thing they are going to do is clear that building and make sure there are no secondary shooters then once they get that done they will start the reunification process,” Williams said. “Get everybody there make sure everyone is accountable. But most importantly they are going to through and try to figure out where it started at what failed? Did they have a door open? How did they breach that door? Or how did they get past the security that was there. Figure out step by step what happened.”This is only the second time a gun has been brought onto a Bend-La Pine school campus. The district’s website says it has a zero tolerance policy for weapons on any of its campuses.Copyright 2026 KPTV-KPDX. All rights reserved.
