3 Held in UP, Haryana, Rs.2 Cr Scam Exposed | #cybercrime | #infosec

Hyderabad: Cybercrime police cracked two major fraud cases and arrested three persons, exposing scams worth more than 2.04 crores. In one case, two men from Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, were held for an insurance fraud of 4.3 lakhs. In another case, a Gurgaon businessman was arrested for his role in a 2 crore online trading scam.

According to DCP D Kavitha, Cybercrime, Hyderabad, in the first case, teams arrested Devash Rastogi and Jitendra Agarwal, both from Ghaziabad for duping a 58-year-old Hyderabad resident. The victim received calls from fraudsters posing as officials of the IGMS Department promising reimbursement of Rs 63,45,918/- from various insurance companies. To release the amount, he was asked to pay a so-called processing fee of 5 per cent amounting to over 3.17 lakhs. Believing the false assurances, the victim made payments of Rs 4.02,329/- lakhs to bank accounts provided by the accused.

Police said the accused were part of a larger network and even supplied bank accounts for fraudulent funds. Their modus operandi involved making calls, offering the non-existent, luring victims with false reimbursement promises, showing virtual profits, and when questioned the answers are either cold and go AWOL. If it is the otherwise, they only keep squeezing ias much as they can. Police also seized three cheque books from them.

In the second case, Cybercrime Police arrested Vineet Chadha from Gurgaon in Haryana, who was linked to a nationwide trading scam. The incident was shed light when a 62-year-old Hyderabad man fell victim after seeing an advertisement on Facebook for a trading platform hosted on a fake website. He downloaded the app, invested heavily, and from the other end, as promised, they were showing profits to gain trust. And with his increase in excitement seeing the gathering numbers, he transferred 2.02 crore into various bank accounts linked to the scam.

When the victim attempted to withdraw, fraudsters started their play and demanded additional taxes and continued to pressure him through WhatsApp. Police revealed that Chadha received illicit credits of 40 lakhs into his IDFC Bank account, which he transferred to associates through shell companies. Six other accused were arrested earlier in connection with the same racket. Police seized six mobile phones, a laptop, and cheque books in his possession.

Cybercrime Police cautioned citizens against believing calls or messages from individuals claiming to represent insurance companies or regulatory bodies. Genuine companies do not demand upfront payments for reimbursements. They also urged investors to be wary of online stock trading suggestions, fake investment apps, and promises of huge short-term returns. Fraudsters frequently lure victims through Telegram, WhatsApp, Instagram, X, and Facebook by displaying fake profit screenshots.

Citizens are always advised to verify investment platforms through official channels, avoid sharing financial details with strangers, and immediately report suspected fraud by dialling 1930 or visiting cybercrime.gov.in.
