Del City police downgraded a charge on a teenager who claimed he shot and killed his mother’s boyfriend to protect her. Police also announced on Thursday they arrested the teen’s mother for accessory to manslaughter.
The department released body camera footage of officers detaining the 17-year-old and his brother after they fled the deadly shooting scene on Sunday near Southeast 29th and South Bryant Avenue. The teenager was later arrested after police say he admitted to shooting 44-year-old Casteal Buckhanan.
In the body camera video, the teenager could be heard telling officers he was protecting his mother, and his brother told officers Buckhanan had a gun. Police said Randi Edwards called her sons to help move her belongings from the apartment after fighting with the victim.
“Once they arrived another disturbance took place and continued for several minutes,” said Lt. Blake Reichert, Del City Police Department.
Police said during a break in the fight the teenager fired at Buckhanan five times. He was initially arrested on a second-degree murder complaint, but that was downgraded after investigators met with the Oklahoma County District Attorney’s office.
Police say the 17-year-old shot his mother’s boyfriend five times after a fight, while his mother is accused of helping her sons flee the scene.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol says an SUV driver and a semi-truck driver traveling east along the Turner Turnpike began a confrontation that lasted for several miles. OHP says at one point, the driver of the SUV produced a firearm and shot at the driver of the semi-truck.
No one was injured in the shooting, but OHP says the semi-truck received severe damage and was disabled by the gunfire.
