NAPLES, Fla. (WINK) — Florida’s attorney general announced the sentencing and conviction of six men in child sexual abuse material cases across Southwest Florida. Two men are from Cape Coral, two from Okechobee, one from Naples and another from Bonita Springs. The shortest sentence is 24 and a half years, while the longest is more than 125 years.Several of the men have been sentenced, and two have been convicted. Attorney General James Uthmeier said they possessed and shared hundreds of files of child pornography, many involving toddlers.Uthmeier said the sentences are an effort to give appropriate consequences and to send a message to others to stay away from children. Some of the tactics used to find predators involve using social media, with officials looking for certain words and requests. The attorney general hopes that by stopping it online, it stops it from turning into something physical.”So you’re you’re talking a record 1000s and 1000s of child predators taken down in the state of Florida just in the last year and a half alone, and we’re only getting started. I promise you this: if there’s anything we’re going to do in Florida, if there’s anything law enforcement is going to prioritize, it is going to be protecting our little ones.” Uthmeier said.

In an effort to protect minors, Florida has passed legislation that does not allow children under the age of 14 to have social media. Uthmeier said more ways to protect children from predators are in the works.Watch the full livestream below:
