A sexual predator with a previous child porn conviction was indicted by a Grundy County grand jury on Wednesday, June 4th. Michael Barendt, 75, of Morris was charged with eight counts of possession of child porn, all class two felonies.

The indictment show Barendt allegedly possessed six videos of nude children under the age of 18 and two videos of children under the age of 13 in the 100 block of Raven Court in Morris on August 16th of 2024.

The Morris Police Department investigated the case. Barendt was arrested on a Grundy County warrant on June 4th by the Morris Police Department and remains in the Grundy County Jail. Meanwhile, Barendt was arrested by the Morris Police Department in March of 2016 and pled guilty to three counts of possessing child porn, all class two felonies in August of 2016.

Barendt was sentenced to four years of probation, must register as a sex offender for life and serve 120 days in the Grundy County Jail by a Grundy County Judge during a sentencing hearing in January of 2017. The Grundy County State’s Attorney’s Office had recommended a nine-year prison term in that case.

In the 2016 case, Barendt possessed three videos of nude children under the age of 13 at his home on Raven Court in Morris. The Morris Police Department was assisted by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Homeland Security Investigations and the High Tech Crime Bureau at the Illinois Attorney General’s Office in the 2016 case.
