CBSE tightens school safety norms; makes CCTV cameras mandatory in classrooms, corridors, playgrounds: New safety rule explained

NEW DELHI: In a significant move aimed at enhancing student safety, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has amended its by-laws, making it mandatory for all affiliated schools to install high-resolution CCTV cameras with real-time audio-visual recording.According to the new regulation, schools must place cameras at all key locations, including:

  • Entry and exit points
  • Lobbies and corridors
  • Staircases
  • Classrooms
  • Laboratories
  • Library
  • Canteen area
  • Store rooms
  • Playgrounds
  • Other common areas

Toilets and washrooms are exempt from this rule, respecting privacy concerns.CBSE has specified that these cameras must be capable of both audio and video recording, enabling real-time monitoring of school premises. The board said that this step is essential for ensuring the safety of students and staff and strengthening surveillance infrastructure.
