TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – A construction zone near Whitmer High School is raising some safety concerns.
“There are cars, not necessarily pulling off to the side streets. They are literally stopping on Alexis Road and letting their children out to drop them off. So obviously not only a traffic concern but a safety concern for the Washington local students,” said Chelsey Butler.
Chelsey Butler lives in the neighborhood. She says she fears a kid might get hurt.
“My side of the neighborhood off of Hearst Road, the children that live in the neighborhood have no choice but to walk into the construction zone,” said Butler.
The city of Toledo is increasing pedestrian safety in the area.
The city is working with Washington Local Schools to relocate Whitmer Dr. and the campus parking lot.
Whitmer Dr. is moving west and the parking lot is moving east.
Once finished, there will be a roundabout at Edgar St. with a raised crosswalk and pedestrian island, which makes it safer for students to cross.
A multi-use path for pedestrians and cyclists and a new mid-block crossing at Alexis and Clegg.
A city spokesperson says they have safe pedestrian routes from both Alexis and Tremainsville.
The designated pedestrian routes are marked with signs and some fencing to direct students to the appropriate path.
“I mean, kids will be kids, right, but at the same time I don’t want to see any kids get hurt,” said Butler.
The project should be completed by mid-November.
