RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) -A dangerous online group is exploiting kids across the world by convincing them to commit crimes in exchange for online game credits and money.
The group calls itself 764, and started as an online network and has evolved into a global operation targeting minors. Members operate across multiple platforms, with Roblox and Discord being the primary venues.
Hollie Strand with the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office said parents, guardians and law enforcement need to understand how 764 functions and the tactics used to manipulate vulnerable children.
Computer Forensic Examiner Hollie Strand said, “This group of users that’s kind of loosely connected, but essentially taunting each other to get kids to do vile, and horrible heinous acts with the ultimate goal of getting each kid at the end to take their life.”
The predators build trust with victims over weeks or months, carefully manipulating them to perform dangerous acts while live-streaming. When minors refuse to participate, 764 members threaten consequences through blackmail and disturbing content.
Strand said, “Incredibly heinous, like puppies and kittens of their skulls being crushed, and decapitated, or they send them child sexual abuse material, pictures or videos of kids being sexually assaulted. Then the blackmailing begins, and it is If your family ever found out that you were looking at this, or that you had this, what would they think?”
Experts urge parents and guardians to monitor their children’s online activity and maintain open communication about what type of games they’re playing or downloading. They also recommend educating children about the dangers of sharing personal information online.
