Cybercrime cases targeting women saw a significant jump in 2025, with over 76,650 incidents reported on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP), according to data shared in the Rajya Sabha.
Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar said in a written reply that complaints rose sharply from 48,335 in 2024 to 76,657 in 2025, marking an increase of over 28,000 cases within a year.
The complaints span a range of offences, including circulation of sexually explicit content, online harassment, stalking and child sexual abuse material. Among these, cases involving obscene content were the most reported at 37,743, followed by sexually explicit acts (19,703), rape-related abusive content (8,780), and child sexual abuse material (10,431).
The data also highlights a broader rise in online and social media-related crimes. Complaints under this category have steadily increased over the past five years, reaching 1,73,766 in 2025, up from 72,301 in 2021.
Within this segment, cyberbullying, stalking and sexting accounted for 45,832 cases in 2025. Fake or impersonation profiles made up 46,784 complaints, while identity theft and profile hacking contributed 34,533 cases. Cheating through impersonation was reported in 23,252 instances.
Other cyber offences recorded during the year included online job fraud (11,126 cases), provocative content linked to unlawful acts (7,595), phishing (2,240), impersonation emails (754), threatening emails (522), and matrimonial fraud (1,128).
The minister noted that policing and public order fall under the jurisdiction of states and Union Territories, which are primarily responsible for handling such crimes. However, the Centre supports these efforts through policy guidance and funding.
As part of its response, the government has allocated over ₹132 crore under the Cyber Crime Prevention against Women and Children (CCPWC) scheme. It has also set up the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre to strengthen coordination in tackling cyber offences.
Additionally, cyber forensic and training laboratories have been established across 33 states and Union Territories, and more than 24,600 officials—including police personnel, prosecutors and judicial officers—have been trained in cybercrime investigation and forensics.
The NCRP platform continues to serve as the primary channel for citizens to report cyber offences, with a particular focus on crimes affecting women and children.
