Minot Water Treatment Plant hit by ransomware; water remained safe | #ransomware | #cybercrime

MINOT, N.D. (KMOT) – A ransomware attack hit a computer server at Minot’s Water Treatment plant earlier this month, according to an internal letter.

In the document dated March 31, the attack occurred on March 14. A spokesperson for the city of Minot said City Manager Tom Joyce submitted the letter to the council.

The impacted server was unplugged, and staff conducted manual procedures for roughly 16 hours, more labor-intensive, according to the letter.

The city manager wrote that the water supply was safe at all times, and the city remained operational.

The city said it accomplished its goals of keeping the water supply safe and maintaining water pressure in storage facilities.

Joyce indicated that whoever sent the ransomware did not directly ask for money, and there was no interaction beyond a letter on a screen.

He added that the city identified opportunities for training exercises, improved communication and preventative system design.

We have reached out to the city of Minot for comment on why the incident was not initially released to the public and will update our story as we learn more.

We also reached out to the FBI for comment.
