Cybercrime costs Americans nearly USD 21 billion in 2025, complaints up 17%
Americans lost nearly USD 21 billion to cybercrime in 2021, according to an annual report from the FBI. The agency’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) received over 1 million complaints last year, a sharp increase from 859,532 in 2024. Phishing/spoofing, extortion, and investment schemes were the most frequently reported complaints, while cryptocurrency and AI were involved in the most costly cases.
