The Jefferson County grand jury has indicted a man on charges of continuously sexually abusing a young girl for nearly a year, usually on Wednesdays and Sundays, inside Calder Baptist Church in Beaumont, according to a probable cause affidavit KFDM News obtained for the indictment.

Marvin Burrows, 56, was indicted for: Continuous Sexual Abuse of a Young Child, a 1st Degree Felony; and Failure to Comply with Sex Offender Registration, a 3rd Degree Felony. If convicted, he could face up to life in prison.

A magistrate set bond at $1 million on the continuous sex abuse charge and $20,000 for failure to comply.

According to the affidavit, the investigation began February 8 of this year when Beaumont police say Burrows was discovered by a relative of the child inside a toy closet in the Sunday School classroom at Calder Baptist Church, 1005 North 11th Street, masturbating while the young girl sat on the floor facing him a few feet away.

Subsequent forensic interviewing at the Garth House resulted in the child making outcries that Burrows sexually assaulted her on multiple occasions. She reported the assaults occurred “a lot” on Sundays and at times on Wednesdays during the course of 11 months.

She also said Burrows used his cell phone to take photographs of her sexual organ, and when she wouldn’t comply with Burrows’ sexual assaults, he struck her, causing bruises and scratches.

On February 12, the detective investigating the case watched the little girl’s recorded interview at the Garth House. She said that “Fritz” (an alias known to belong to Burrows) repeatedly took her upstairs at the church when others weren’t looking and sexually assaulted her on numerous occasions. She reported the assaults took place “a lot” on Sundays and at times on Wednesdays, for a period that aligns with the family’s acquaintance with Burrows, a period of about 11 months. She said Burrows used his cell phone to photograph her sexual organ, and when she wouldn’t comply with his sexual assaults he struck her, causing bruising and scratching.

Police obtained a search warrant and when checking his phone, they discovered a named album referring to the young girl as “my wife.”

KFDM News called the church for comment this afternoon. We were told the pastor wasn’t available at the time we called.

Burrows says he’s homeless, and during his January verification, he used the address for Some Other Place, 1107 McFaddin, in order to receive mail. During the sex assault investigation, officers say they learned Burrows had been continuously living at a hotel off Interstate 10 since July 2024 and lying about his true address.
