Carlos Cabreiro takes office as national director of the PJ with a focus on innovation, AI and combating cybercrime | #cybercrime | #infosec


With an emotional speech when talking about his family, Carlos Cabreiro took office as national director of the Judiciary Police (PJ). He began by stating that he took on the role with “enthusiasm and esprit de corps” and thanked the “trust” placed in his choice.

In his speech, he left words of “encouragement, encouragement and strong motivation” for PJ professionalsin all categories. “I count on your determination to follow a path of success, projecting PJ as a reference”, he said.

The new national director left a special thank you to his predecessor, Luís Neves, who attended the inauguration ceremony. “We are well aware of the challenge, and being the successor will certainly make this challenge greater”he highlighted. He also added that people “can count on the men and women who build the PJ”, professionals with “dedication to the public cause”.

Regarding the future, he stated that the national management will focus on the “innovation process through digital transition” and that it will “foster the development of modernization projects” and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Regarding crime, promises special focus against violent crime, organized crime and drug trafficking, in addition to all types of cybercrime.

More than 30 years at PJ

Cabreiro’s name, until then director of the National Unit to Combat Cybercrime and Technological Crime (UNC3T), became known on March 31st. The DN found that the name chosen by the Government was well received in the Judiciary.

Carlos Manuel Antão Cabreiro, whose mandate will be three years, He has been in the Judiciary for almost 35 years and, at 59, has reached the highest position within this security force. The majority of a police officer’s career is linked to computer and economic crime.

It was the action of the unit commanded by Cabreiro that arrested hacker Rui Pinto, creator of Football Leaks, where he reported several situations related to football, particularly in Portugal and involving Benfica. Another case that involved the UNC3T was the arrest of Paulo Abreu dos Santos, lawyer and former assistant to the former Minister of Justice, Catarina Sarmento e Castro, accused of hundreds of crimes of child pornography and two of sexual abuse of minors.
