It’s an appealing vision for organisations grappling with escalating cyber risks and chronic skills shortages. Yet, beneath the marketing, industry leaders are increasingly warning that the concept is fundamentally flawed.

Rather than representing the future of cybersecurity, the autonomous SOC risks distracting businesses from a more practical and effective model – one built on close collaboration between human expertise and machine intelligence.

Autonomy was never the objective

At the heart of the autonomous SOC narrative lies a simple assumption: cybersecurity is primarily an execution problem. Organisations face an overwhelming volume of alerts, too few analysts, and insufficient speed to respond. Remove the human bottleneck, the argument goes, and the problem is solved.

However, security operations are not merely about execution but about decision-making. Every action taken in response to a potential threat is shaped by context, including business priorities, regulatory requirements and risk tolerance.

Preparing for the agentic enterprise

The debate around autonomous SOCs is now being overtaken by a broader shift: the rise of the “agentic enterprise”. Organisations are increasingly deploying AI agents across multiple functions, including finance, human resources and customer service.

This proliferation introduces new risks and complexities. Actions taken by one system may have unintended consequences elsewhere in the organisation. Managing these interdependencies requires a level of governance that extends beyond traditional cybersecurity frameworks.

Security teams must now consider how to monitor and control the behaviour of numerous autonomous or semi-autonomous agents operating simultaneously. This includes establishing policies that ensure alignment with organisational intent, maintaining visibility across systems and enabling robust auditing capabilities.

Governance will define success

The allure of the autonomous SOC lies in its simplicity: a promise of eliminating human limitations through technology. Yet this simplicity is deceptive as removing human oversight does not eliminate complexity – it merely shifts risk to less visible parts of the system.

A more resilient approach recognises that automation and governance must go hand in hand. AI systems should operate within clearly defined parameters, with humans retaining ultimate accountability for outcomes.

This requires organisations to rethink their operating models, invest in new skills and establish frameworks that balance speed with control. It is a more demanding path than pursuing full autonomy, but one that avoids the pitfalls of unchecked automation.

A disciplined path forward

As cyber threats continue to evolve, businesses cannot afford to rely on shortcuts. The future of security operations will not be defined by fully autonomous systems, but by the effective integration of human and machine capabilities.

In this context, the goal is not to replace human decision-makers, but to empower them. By leveraging AI to enhance visibility, streamline processes and inform strategy, organisations can build security operations that are both scalable and accountable.

The autonomous SOC may remain an enticing vision, but the realities of modern enterprise environments demand a more disciplined approach: one that prioritises control, context and collaboration over the illusion of complete automation.
