I write a lot about scams because I hate to see good, hardworking people have their money and personal information stolen by criminals who would be better served using their talents for something worthwhile and legal.
There are thousands of different scams being worked in Illinois and across the nation, and many of them are aimed directly at people over the age of 60.
When it comes to scams, nobody has a bigger target on their back than America’s senior citizens, and a disturbing new case out of Palos Park, Illinois is just the latest proof.
According to Patch.com, an elderly couple in their 80s was recently targeted in what’s being called a “ruse burglary” scheme involving individuals posing as water department workers. The suspects arrived at the home wearing reflective vests and helmets, appearing legitimate enough to gain trust. While they distracted the couple under the guise of checking water service, an accomplice slipped inside the home and stole costume jewelry.
This Type Of Disturbing Scam Has Worked Really Well For A Long Time
Authorities say these types of impostor crimes rely on confidence, urgency, and deception, often targeting older residents who are more likely to answer the door and be polite to what appears to be “city workers.”
In this case, the couple didn’t realize anything was wrong until the fake workers had already left.
If you do some searching, you’ll quickly see that these scams are far from rare. In fact, police departments and sheriff’s offices across Illinois regularly warn about impostors posing as utility employees, contractors, inspectors, and even law enforcement officers as part of broader schemes to gain access to homes.

The Numbers Of Senior-Focused Scams Continue To Rise
According to federal and academic research on fraud, older adults consistently experience higher rates of financial exploitation, with billions of dollars lost annually to scams ranging from impersonation fraud to tech support schemes.
One analysis of scam operations found that criminals deliberately “select and groom” vulnerable populations, with seniors often viewed as the most profitable targets due to perceived trust, savings, and isolation.
In Palos Park, police say no one was physically harmed, but the emotional and financial toll remains very real. It’s a reminder that scams don’t always come in the form of sketchy emails or phone calls. They can show up right at the front door, wearing a vest and carrying a clipboard.
As Patch.com reports, authorities are urging residents to verify all unexpected utility visits directly with their local department before opening the door or allowing entry.
