AARP combats Las Vegas senior scams with free workshops | #datingscams #romancescams

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) is hosting eight events around the Las Vegas valley during the month of April to combat scams affecting senior citizens.

According to the AARP Fraud Watch Network Helpline, at least 239 victims reported fraud and scams in Nevada during 2025. They said losses totaled more than $3.1 million.

Identity theft, imposter scams, and sweepstakes fraud were among the most common types of scams reported by Nevadans, according to the AARP.

To protect members, the AARP hosted its third free workshop on Wednesday at Rainbow Library near West Cheyenne Avenue and North Buffalo Drive.

At least 36 people were in attendance as AARP volunteers presented information on how to detect and report scams.

“AARP is working throughout the state to help prevent fraud,” AARP volunteer Renee Newry said. “For example, working with legislation to help with cryptocurrency right now. That’s a hot topic.”

Nevada is home to 447 cryptocurrency kiosks, 336 in Clark County alone, according to the AARP, which said the crypto industry lacks consumer protections.

Newry said nationally, the AARP reported around 100,000 cases of fraud to the Federal Trade Commission.

Newry said the planned workshops help senior citizens hear common phone scams and feel what it’s like to be in a scam without even realizing it.

“It’s so important to educate people on fraud. It’s something that happens in a moment. And you know maybe they’re trying to rush us through an event, or you know something happens to our computer,” Newry said. “And so often we react. And we’re teaching people to just stop and think about what’s happening, not to react. Because that’s what the scammers are counting on.”
