Lake Conroe Lions learn about preventing financial fraud | #datingscams #romancescams

Lake Conroe Centennial Lions Club held a general meeting recently at Walden Yacht Club. President Katherine Maher opened the meeting and led us in the pledges to the American Flag and the Texas Flag.

After a prayer by Bill Hogan, Vice President Dot Anderson reported on how the Scholarship Program for high school students was progressing.  Marie Underdown shared the Good News about the Blood Drive sponsored by the 5 O’Clock Phlock Parrot Head Club and the Rotary Club of Lake Conroe which was April 18.

Our Guest Speakers for the evening were Julie Leone with First Financial Bank of Montgomery and Jamie McBee with First Financial Bank of Conroe.

Julie has been in banking for 30 years, the last five years with First Financial. She has been involved in training, audit, and retail operations.  Julie is a native to Montgomery County and also a current member Montgomery County Association of Business Women.  She is also active in several other local Conroe/Lake Conroe organizations.

Jamie has been working in banking for 21 years, the last 17 at First Financial Bank. She has worked in the area of operations for most of her career and is currently serving as a regional manager for the Greater Houston region.  Jamie is active with the Conroe/Lake Conroe Chamber of Commerce and is a member of the Montgomery County Fair Non-livestock auction committee.

Jule and Jamie’s program, entitled “Senior Fraud”, explains how scammers financially exploit seniors.  They mentioned that 1 in 10 elder adults suffer abuse or fraud and billions of dollars are lost every year.  In 2024, $28 billion was lost and $36 billion in 2025!  And only 1 in 14 cases are even reported!

Some of the more common are grandparent scams, romance scams, and tech support scams.  Julie and Jamie emphasize:  When in doubt ignore it and move on.  In addition, they advise to never give anyone your password, ever!  Imposter scammers pretend to be someone who they are not.  Julie and Jamie further advise you to get to know someone personally from your bank and go to them directly with any questions.

In addition, Julie and Jamie caution to avoid “act now” requests. Legitimate consumer companies do not call and request immediate payment.  And never give out a verification number on your phone.  Julie and Jamie finished with the Three Golden Rules:  1. Slow Down.   2. Never send a wire transfer to someone you do not fully know.  3. Do not share your Social Security Number, online banking password, debit card password or accounting and routing numbers.

Thank you, Julie and Jamie for this important information.  You may have saved one of us a lot of headaches down the road!

Lake Conroe Centennial Lions Club meets the 2nd and 4th Thursdays at Walden Yacht Club. Happy hour is at 5:30 pm upstairs and the meeting begins at 6 pm downstairs.  Please contact President Katherine Maher at katherine@lakeconroelady.com.
