Streaming giants and gaming platforms have emerged as the unlikely winners of the Albanese government’s under-16 social media age ban, capitalising on a forced pivot in how hundreds of millions of dollars in taxpayer advertising is deployed.

With the government locked out of using traditional social media to reach the critical demographic, officials are pouring resources into apps like Spotify and Twitch – as well as PC and mobile games – to reach teenagers who, despite the new law, are largely still ignoring the ban.
