Two students from Huron Academy in Clinton Township won first place in the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office annual “Knocking Violence Out of My School” competition after finishing in third place last year.

Mikayla Jeffreys and Michaella Julia Oh from Huron Academy on Utica Road near Metropolitan Parkway took first place with the 2-minute video, “Be the Difference,” that depicts the moments before a school shooter acts as well as bullying incidents, and asks viewers to choose love over hate.

Mikayla and Michaella, who share a $1,000 prize, and a third student won third place in the contest with a different video a year ago.

Both the second-place and third-place videos came from students at Lake Shore High School in St. Clair Shores. Each video is 1-minute long.

Amaria Goodwin won second place and $750 with a video entitled, “A Normal Day,” which encourages students to speak up, and Lyla Card and Sara Augustitus took third place and $500 for the video, “More than just Books,” which depicts the negative impact of bullying.

Tonya Goetz, chief of the Juvenile Unit, praised the participants, noting that the caliber of entries continues to rise each year. She emphasized that the students’ dedication and originality made the selection process both exciting and difficult.

Prosecutor Peter Lucido will meet with the winning students to present their awards, and each winning student’s school will be honored with a Macomb County Prosecutor’s Hero Award, celebrating the students’ leadership and commitment to creating safer school environments.

Lucido initiated the contest in 2023  designed to give students a platform to influence their peers and take an active role in preventing school violence.

The 2026 competition challenged students to produce impactful videos highlighting the importance of speaking out against threats, violence, weapons and bullying. Submissions were reviewed and the winners selected by the Juvenile Unit assistant prosecuting attorneys and support staff.
