Japanese Financial Institutions Gain Access to OpenAI Model to Strengthen Cybersecurity
————————————-
Japan is turning to advanced artificial intelligence to strengthen cybersecurity across its financial sector, as concerns grow over AI-enabled cyberattacks.
Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama said some Japanese financial institutions have been given access to OpenAI’s GPT-5.5 model to help improve their ability to detect and respond to cyber threats.
The announcement came after Katayama met OpenAI Chief Strategy Officer Jason Kwon in Tokyo. Japanese officials described the move as an important step in protecting the country’s financial infrastructure from increasingly sophisticated attacks.
Nikkei reported that Japan’s three major banks — MUFG Bank, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp., and Mizuho Bank — are expected to be among the institutions using the model.
OpenAI has said its Trusted Access for Cyber program is designed to provide enhanced cyber capabilities to verified defenders while restricting uses that could enable real-world harm.
The development comes as governments and financial regulators worldwide warn that advanced AI tools can be used both to identify vulnerabilities and to strengthen defenses against hackers.
