Trump unveils AI initiative White House says highlights innovation and security #AI

President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Tuesday aimed at strengthening AI oversight by asking technology companies to submit advanced artificial intelligence models for government review up to 30 days before release.

The White House said the order, titled “Promoting Advanced Artificial Intelligence Innovation and Security,” seeks to preserve U.S. leadership in AI by encouraging innovation, while also creating a new framework for evaluating the risks associated with the most powerful AI models.

“Advanced AI capabilities make our Nation stronger, but also introduce new national security considerations that require coordinated action across executive departments and agencies,” Trump said in the order.

“As these capabilities evolve, my Administration will continue to work closely with industry to ensure that the best and most secure technology is deployed rapidly to confront any and all threats to our country. We will continue to lead an America First cybersecurity effort that enhances both our national security and our global AI dominance,” the president said in the order.

According to the order, the government would have 30 days to review an AI system, a shorter time frame than some in the industry were expecting. A longer time period might have been seen as too burdensome for a fast-moving and highly competitive industry.

The order comes less than two weeks after Trump canceled an Oval Office event with tech industry executives because he did not like what he saw in the earlier version of the order’s text.

“We’re leading China, we’re leading everybody, and I don’t want to do anything that’s going to get in the way of that lead,” Trump told reporters at the time.
